Te mapa
Arkhangel’sk stretches for many kilometres along the right bank of the Northern Dvina, close to where the river divides into a broad delta before reaching the White Sea. The city is long and narrow, with main avenues running parallel to the river and shorter streets crossing them at right angles, so the map reads as a disciplined grid pressed against the water.
Downstream, the delta breaks the land into islands and channels, and districts such as Solombala sit on islands of their own, joined to the centre by bridges. The riverside embankment runs for a long distance through the centre, and wetlands and forest press close to the outer districts, giving the city firm natural edges on almost every side.
Founded in 1584 by order of Ivan the Terrible, the city was for more than a century Russia's main seaport, until Saint Petersburg took over that role. Its maritime tradition endures in the harbour and the old shipyards of Solombala. An Arkhangel’sk map poster captures a city defined by a great northern river and its delta.
The broad river runs along the entire length of the city, with the embankment and piers forming a long, straight edge that anchors the composition.
Downstream, the river splits into channels around low islands, including Solombala, creating an intricate pattern of land and water north of the centre.
Main streets run lengthwise along the river, crossed by shorter perpendicular streets, a regular grid that gives the centre a calm, ordered look.
