Kuopio sits on a peninsula in Lake Kallavesi in eastern Finland, and on a map the water dominates. Inlets, islands and bridges surround the town. The centre is laid out as a regular grid of straight streets and square blocks, a clear piece of planning set against the irregular outline of the lake. Beyond it, residential areas spread along the shore and across neighbouring islands.
To the west of the grid rises Puijo, a forested hill with an observation tower. On a map its slopes are a quiet, open patch next to the tight street pattern. Near the northern tip of the peninsula, the Väinölänniemi park runs along the shore. The market square sits at the heart of the grid and anchors the town centre.
