Te mapa
Kizhi lies in the northern part of Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia. On a map it appears as a thin strip of land running roughly north to south, set within a complex water landscape of islets, narrow straits and inlets that make up the Kizhi skerries.
The island is best known for Kizhi Pogost, an ensemble of wooden churches and a bell tower inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Church of the Transfiguration, built without nails according to tradition, carries twenty-two wooden domes. The island also serves as an open-air museum of traditional wooden architecture moved from across the region.
A Kizhi map poster frames the island within the pattern of water and land around it. The narrow outline, the surrounding islands and the channels between them create an intricate but calm composition. It is a natural choice for admirers of wooden architecture, travellers on Lake Onega and anyone with ties to Karelia.
The church ensemble stands near the southern end of the island, marking the site of its best-known and most visited buildings.
The island is long and slim, only a few hundred metres wide in places, so it reads on the map as a fine strip of land.
Numerous small islands and winding straits surround Kizhi, turning the lake around it into a detailed pattern of water and land.

Koteā ko Kizhi
Kizhi leaves a strong impression on those who reach it by boat across Lake Onega. A map of the island and its skerries is a thoughtful way to remember the journey and the wooden churches at its end.
