Te mapa
Vologda lies in northern European Russia, and the Vologda River gives it its shape, looping through the city from west to east. The historic core sits along the river's bends, with the kremlin area and the Cathedral of St Sophia on the northern bank. Beyond it, streets extend in a mix of older irregular lanes and later straight avenues.
First mentioned in chronicles in 1147, Vologda is one of the older cities of the Russian north. It is known for its wooden architecture, with carved houses still standing in several neighbourhoods, and for Vologda lace and Vologda butter, both widely recognised names. The stone St Sophia Cathedral was built in the sixteenth century on the orders of Ivan the Terrible.
A Vologda map poster brings out the river's curves and the gentle grid of the surrounding districts. Railway lines converge on the station south of the centre, and the city's edges fade into flat, forested countryside. In black and white, the looping river and the compact historic centre give the composition a clear, readable focal point.
The river winds through the city in wide bends, splitting it into northern and southern halves and forming the central line of the composition.
On the northern bank, the historic kremlin area around St Sophia Cathedral forms the oldest part of the city, with its streets gathered close to the water.
Vologda is an important railway junction, and tracks converge on the station south of the centre, adding long straight lines to the map.
