Te mapa
Kostroma stands on the left bank of the Volga where the Kostroma River joins it, and it is one of the old towns of Russia's Golden Ring. After a fire destroyed much of the centre in 1773, the city was rebuilt to a regular plan, with streets radiating from the main square toward the river. A local legend says the design followed a fan that Catherine the Great laid on the plan.
Across the Kostroma River to the west stands the Ipatiev Monastery. Mikhail Romanov was living there in 1613 when he was called to the throne, which began the Romanov dynasty. On the map it shows as a compact walled enclosure beside the water, facing the old centre. Bridges cross the Volga to the districts spread along the southern shore.
A Kostroma map poster shows one of the clearest planned centres in provincial Russia. The radiating streets, the broad sweep of the Volga and the meeting of the two rivers form a composition that seems made for print, balanced and easy to read even from across a room.

The wide river crosses the whole frame. The old city sits on its northern bank, and bridges connect it to the districts on the far shore.
The walled monastery beside the Kostroma River, closely tied to the Romanov dynasty, sits as a small, distinct enclosure just west of the historic core.
