Te mapa
Sergiyev Posad grew up around the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius, founded in the fourteenth century by Sergius of Radonezh. It is still one of the most important monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church. The town lies about seventy kilometres north-east of Moscow, and the Lavra is unmistakable on the map: an irregular walled enclosure on high ground with the town wrapped around it.
The monastery complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the town is part of the Golden Ring of historic cities around Moscow. It is also known for wooden toys and became one of the main centres of matryoshka making around the turn of the twentieth century. During the Soviet period, from 1930 to 1991, it was called Zagorsk.
A Sergiyev Posad map poster centres on that walled shape. Below the walls lie the small Konchura river and its ponds, and the older streets radiate toward the roads to Moscow and Yaroslavl. Further out, the railway and later districts spread in a looser pattern. The poster shows clearly a town that has always taken its shape from its monastery.
The fortified monastery forms an irregular polygon of walls and towers on its hill. It is the most recognisable shape on the map and the reason the town grew here at all.
Below the Lavra, the small Konchura river and a chain of ponds run through a hollow. This quiet band of open space sets the monastery apart from the surrounding streets.
The historic route from Moscow toward Yaroslavl passes through the town. Together with the railway beside it, it gives the poster a strong axis through the older street pattern.

Koteā ko Sergiyev Posad
Pilgrims, Golden Ring travellers and people born in Zagorsk-era apartments all have their own reasons to keep this map. It makes a thoughtful souvenir of a visit to the Lavra, or a portrait of a hometown whose historic centre is still defined by its monastery.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can all be edited, so the poster might read Sergiyev Posad, Zagorsk or simply a family date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download 300 DPI PNG and PDF files in six sizes for $9.
