Te mapa
Korolev lies just beyond Moscow's northeastern boundary in Moscow Oblast. From above, it forms a compact block of residential districts and industrial sites. The forest of Losiny Ostrov National Park presses in from the south, and the Klyazma river curves along its northern side. The Yaroslavl railway line runs through the city and links it directly to central Moscow.
The city is closely tied to the Soviet and Russian space programme. It was known as Kaliningrad until 1996, when it was renamed after Sergei Korolev, the chief designer behind the first satellite and the first human spaceflight. The rocket company RSC Energia and the Russian Mission Control Centre are based here, which is why the city is often called the space capital of Russia.
A Korolev map poster shows the planned logic of a Soviet science town. Wide avenues frame large residential blocks, and big industrial complexes occupy whole sections of the map. Green edges surround it all. The river and the forest soften the outline, giving a clear sense of a city built with a single purpose but surrounded by nature.
The southern side of the city meets one of Moscow's largest forests. It appears on the map as a wide area of open space with few roads.
The river winds along the northern outskirts in soft loops, with small reservoirs and meadows along its banks.
The main line toward Moscow crosses the city in a straight diagonal, with station squares forming small hubs of streets along it.
