Te mapa
Murmansk is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle, stretched for many kilometres along the eastern shore of Kola Bay, a long fjord-like inlet of the Barents Sea. From above it is a narrow city: streets climb in terraces up the hillsides from the port, and the whole urban area runs north to south, parallel to the water.
Thanks to the warm North Atlantic Current, the bay stays ice-free all year, which is why the city was founded here in 1916 as a port and has remained central to Arctic shipping. The nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin, now a museum ship, is moored at the waterfront, and the Kola Bay Bridge crosses the inlet south of the city.
On a hill above the port stands the monument known as Alyosha, dedicated to the defenders of the Soviet Arctic in the Second World War. A Murmansk map poster captures the city's unusual shape, a thin band of streets between water and tundra, with lakes scattered in the hills and the dark line of the bay down one side.
The long inlet runs the full length of the map, its shores lined with piers and shipyards, giving the city its narrow, linear form.
Residential streets step up the slopes above the harbour, following the contours in long curving rows that give the map a layered, rhythmic look.
Several small lakes sit among the housing on the higher ground, including Semyonovskoye near the Alyosha monument, adding pale shapes to the street pattern.

Koteā ko Murmansk
Murmansk is a place people rarely forget, whether they grew up with the polar night, served in the region or travelled north to see the aurora. Its long, narrow shape makes a striking vertical poster.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a year, and edit the coordinates line that shows the city's far northern latitude. Choose Noir or Blueprint for a cold look, or Classic black & white, and download the $9 files in six sizes.
