Te mapa
Umeå lies on the Ume River a short distance from where it meets the Gulf of Bothnia. The river runs through the city from northwest to southeast, and the centre sits on its northern bank, laid out in a regular grid. Several bridges connect it to the southern districts, and the map shows neighbourhoods spreading outward along the water and into the surrounding forest.
After a fire destroyed much of the town in 1888, Umeå was rebuilt with wide streets lined with birch trees to act as firebreaks, earning it the name City of Birches. Today it is a major university city in northern Sweden and was a European Capital of Culture in 2014.
An Umeå map poster captures the river as the defining line, with the centre's grid on one side and the long curves of bridges and roads crossing to the other. The university campus, residential areas and the river islands complete a composition that is calm, open and distinctly northern.
