Te mapa
Dikson Island sits in the Kara Sea at the northern end of the Yenisei Gulf, where one of Siberia's great rivers finally reaches open water. It is small and irregular, with a coast of rocky points and shallow coves. Across a narrow strait lies the mainland part of the settlement of Dikson, one of the northernmost settlements in Russia.
The island is named after Oscar Dickson, the Swedish patron who funded Arctic expeditions including Nordenskiöld's voyage along the Northern Sea Route. A polar station was established here in the early twentieth century, and Dikson grew into a port and weather post on the route. In 1942 it came under attack from a German warship, an episode still remembered locally.
A Dikson Island map poster is a study in Arctic scale: a compact island, a handful of streets and buildings, and a huge surrounding sea. Placing the island and the mainland shore together shows the settlement as it really works, split across the water. It is a fitting print for anyone who has worked or served along the Northern Sea Route.
The settlement straddles the strait, with one part on the island and another on the mainland, so streets appear on both sides of the water.
To the south, the long gulf of the Yenisei opens into the sea, and a wider crop shows the island standing at the mouth of the river.
Small bays and stony points make the island's edge irregular and detailed, which gives such a small shape a surprising amount of character.

Koteā ko Dikson Island
Dikson matters to people who have lived or worked in the Russian Arctic, to meteorologists and sailors, and to those who follow the history of the Northern Sea Route. The map is sparse and wide, and it holds its own in a dark or minimal room.
Personalise the title with Dikson or its Russian name, add a date or the years spent there, and keep the coordinates line as a precise marker. Noir suits the polar mood, alongside Classic black & white, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as files or prints.
