Te mapa
Hopen is a remote island in the Svalbard archipelago, lying in the Barents Sea southeast of Spitsbergen. From above it is long and remarkably narrow, a thin strip of land running roughly southwest to northeast, with steep slopes and a high central ridge along much of its length. Its outline is simple and elegant, a single line of land with open sea on every side.
The island has no permanent residents other than the small crew who staff a Norwegian meteorological station, which has been gathering weather data here for decades. There are no towns or roads to speak of, only the station's buildings and the tracks around them. Sea ice surrounds the island for much of the year.
Hopen is also known as a denning area for polar bears, which come ashore to give birth during the winter. A Hopen map poster reduces the island to its essentials: a narrow ridge of land, the Barents Sea around it and the coordinates of one of the most isolated weather stations in Europe.
The island is long and very thin, rising steeply to a high spine. Its outline reads almost as a single brushstroke across the map.
A small Norwegian meteorological station is the island's only settlement, staffed year-round by a handful of people recording Arctic weather.
Hopen is an important denning site for polar bears, which make their dens in the island's snow during winter to give birth.

Koteā ko Hopen
Hopen appeals to people who have served at the station, visited Svalbard or simply love the far north. Its slender silhouette works beautifully in a tall frame, with the empty sea giving it room.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the dates of an overwintering, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir gives the island the feel of the polar night.
