Te mapa
Nordaustlandet is the second-largest island in Svalbard, lying northeast of Spitsbergen across the Hinlopen Strait. It has no roads and no permanent residents, so its map is a study in pure shape. It shows a heavy, rounded landmass edged by fjords, bays and small islands, far up in the high Arctic, where the sea is frozen for much of the year.
Two ice caps cover most of the island. Austfonna in the east is one of the largest ice caps in Europe by area, and much of its edge meets the sea as a long wall of ice cliffs. Vestfonna covers much of the west. A Nordaustlandet map poster renders these as broad, calm surfaces surrounded by a complex, indented coast wherever the land is free of ice.
The island lies within Svalbard's protected nature reserves, and its bays are visited mostly by expedition ships in summer. Polar bears, walrus and seabird colonies are its main residents. Its size is hard to grasp from the ground: at more than 14,000 square kilometres, it is roughly as large as Northern Ireland, yet no one lives there.
The eastern ice cap reaches the Barents Sea along a line of ice cliffs that runs for well over a hundred kilometres. It is one of the longest glacier fronts in the Northern Hemisphere.
The channel that separates Nordaustlandet from Spitsbergen, known for sea ice, strong currents and wildlife. It forms the island's western edge in any wider view.
Along parts of the northern and western coasts, the ice gives way to bare tundra, bays and low islands. These areas carry the finest detail on the map.

Koteā ko Nordaustlandet
Nordaustlandet is for people who have sailed around Svalbard, worked in polar science, or simply feel drawn to the far north. With no streets to fill it, the print becomes almost abstract: a single pale shape against the sea that suits a spare, quiet room.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with an expedition name or a date. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint in particular suits a subject this close to a nautical chart.
