Rudolf Island lies at the northern edge of Franz Josef Land, Russia's high Arctic archipelago. It is almost entirely covered by an ice cap, which reaches the coast on most sides and ends in cliffs of ice above the sea. Its northern tip, Cape Fligely, is generally cited as the northernmost point of Europe.
From above, the island is a broad, rounded shape with only small patches of bare ground, mostly along the coast. It has no roads in any usual sense and no permanent population. A Rudolf Island map poster is almost pure outline: the curve of the ice edge, a few capes and bays, and the narrow straits that separate it from neighbouring islands to the south.
Its position made it a base for polar expeditions. The Italian expedition led by the Duke of the Abruzzi wintered at Teplitz Bay in 1899 and 1900, and a sledge party then pushed north across the sea ice. In the Soviet era the island had a polar station and an airfield, which was used in the 1937 flights that set up the first drifting station at the North Pole.
The island's northern tip, commonly named as Europe's northernmost point, marks the top edge of the outline, with only the Arctic Ocean beyond it.
An inlet where early polar expeditions wintered and later a Soviet station stood, one of the few named places on an otherwise ice-bound outline.
Nearly the whole island lies under a single ice cap, so the coastline reads as a smooth, continuous curve rather than a ragged edge of rock.

Koteā ko Rudolf Island
Rudolf Island appeals to people drawn to extremes: polar historians, expedition sailors, readers of Arctic exploration and anyone who likes the idea of a map with almost nothing on it. On a wall, its rounded silhouette is quietly striking.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the latitude of Cape Fligely or the year of an expedition. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. HD downloads cost $9 for six print sizes, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
