Te mapa
Anchieta lies on the southern coast of Espírito Santo, where the Benevente River flows into the Atlantic. The town is shaped by that meeting of river and sea. On the map, the river curves through low ground toward its mouth, the historic centre stands on higher land above it, and the coastline stretches away in a series of beaches and rocky points.
The town takes its name from José de Anchieta, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary who spent his final years here and died in 1597. The church and residence associated with him, now the National Sanctuary of Saint José de Anchieta, sit on a hill overlooking the river mouth and form the historic heart of the town.
The coast nearby also includes an industrial port complex at Ubu, whose piers and large facilities show clearly from above. An Anchieta map poster combines these layers: the river, the old hilltop centre, the curve of the beaches and the geometric forms of the port.
The river winds through low land to meet the Atlantic beside the town. Its curves and the wide mouth give the poster a strong, natural centre.
The historic centre and Anchieta's sanctuary stand on higher ground above the river mouth. Their streets form a small, tight knot overlooking the water.
Beaches and headlands extend along the coast from the town. In a wider frame, their irregular edge contrasts with the straight lines of the port.
