Te mapa
Colatina grew on both banks of the Rio Doce, one of the largest rivers in south-eastern Brazil, in the interior of Espírito Santo. From above, the river is the dominant feature. It runs through the city as a wide band of water, with the main commercial centre on one side and large residential districts on the other, linked by road bridges.
Away from the river the land rises quickly into hills, and the street network follows the terrain. Flat riverside districts have a fairly regular grid, while neighbourhoods on the slopes bend and branch along ridges and valleys. Small streams run down to the Rio Doce, and patches of pasture and forest appear at the edges of the city.
Colatina is known as a centre of the clothing industry in Espírito Santo, and many residents are descendants of Italian immigrants who settled the region in the late nineteenth century. A Colatina map poster shows a river city whose shape comes from water and slope rather than from any single plan.
The wide river divides the city into north and south. It draws a broad band across the poster, and everything else is arranged around it.
Road bridges connect the two banks. The streets leading to them are among the busiest and most clearly defined lines on the map.
Districts on the slopes follow the terrain with curving, branching streets, in contrast to the straighter blocks along the riverbanks.
