Te mapa
Aneityum is the southernmost inhabited island of Vanuatu, lying below Tanna in Tafea Province. From above it is a broad, roughly rounded island with a rugged interior of forested ridges and deep valleys that drain toward the coast. Coral reefs fringe much of the shoreline, drawn as a thin line offshore that follows the land at a short distance.
Villages are spread around the coast, and the main settlement, Anelcauhat, faces a bay on the southern side. Just offshore lies Inyeug, a tiny sandy islet better known to visitors as Mystery Island, where a grass airstrip and cruise-ship stops bring most of the island's outside traffic. Roads are few, and footpaths link much of the island.
Aneityum was an early centre of missionary activity in the southern New Hebrides during the nineteenth century, and much of its community life still gathers along the coast. An Aneityum map poster shows how the settlements cling to the shore while the interior stays wild, a pattern common across Vanuatu but especially clear on this compact southern island.
The small islet of Inyeug sits off the southern coast, its airstrip and sandy shore forming a neat, pale shape just beyond the main island.
Ridges and valleys fill the centre of the island, drawn with streams and contours rather than roads, which gives the map a natural, organic feel.
A band of coral reef follows much of the coastline, adding a second outline around the island that echoes its shape at a short distance.

Koteā ko Aneityum
Aneityum is a map for ni-Vanuatu families, for cruise passengers who stepped ashore at Mystery Island, and for sailors who anchored in its bays. Its organic shape, with the reef traced around it, gives the poster a quiet, natural presence.
