Anju is in Tongliang District in the west of Chongqing and is known above all as an ancient town. Its old quarter stands where the Qiong River meets the Fu River, and from above the confluence gives the place its shape. Two waterways converge, and the historic streets gather on the land between and beside them.
The old town is a close-grained network of lanes, steps and small squares, and newer districts spread along the roads and riverbanks nearby. The surrounding countryside is hilly, with farmland and scattered settlements. The map moves from a dense centre by the water to a loose rural texture at the edges.
