Te mapa
Anūpgarh lies in the far north of Rajasthan, in the Sri Ganganagar area close to the border with Pakistan. The land is flat, part of the edge of the Thar. Canal irrigation has turned much of it into farmland, and on a map the town's streets are surrounded by a strict geometry of channels, roads and field boundaries.
The town takes its name from a fort built in the seventeenth century by Anup Singh of the Bikaner state. The fort was meant to secure this frontier land. Today the settlement is an agricultural market town, and the canal network is what has shaped the landscape around it most.
An Anūpgarh map poster is about lines, not landmarks. Straight canals and roads divide the plain into large rectangles, and the town appears as a denser patch where they meet. It is a clean, almost diagrammatic map, especially in the Blueprint or Sand styles.
Long, straight irrigation channels cross the plain around the town. They are the most striking lines on the map and a sign of how the desert was farmed.
Field boundaries follow the canals and roads, making a patchwork of large regular blocks that stretches in every direction.
The town lies close to the international border, at the edge of settled land where the plain opens toward the desert.
