Te mapa
Ardakān lies on the dry plain north of Yazd, and its map tells the story of two cities. The older quarters are a close weave of narrow, bending alleys, traditionally lined with mud-brick walls and punctuated by windcatchers, while newer districts spread out in broad, straight avenues and regular blocks. Around it all, the desert is almost empty on the map, with only roads and a few settlements crossing it.
The city grew around qanats, the underground channels that carry water from distant hills, a system that made settled life possible in this arid part of Iran. It is known as the birthplace of former president Mohammad Khatami, and the county also contains Chak Chak, a mountain shrine that is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Iran's Zoroastrian community.
An Ardakān map poster brings out the contrast between organic and planned: the compact, inward-looking old town, designed around shade and privacy, and the open modern grid that surrounds it. Set against the blank space of the desert, even a modest street network reads with unusual clarity.
Narrow, curving alleys form a dense and intricate pattern in the older part of the city, laid out to shelter residents from sun and wind.
Newer districts are organised around wide, straight roads and regular blocks, a clear geometric contrast to the irregular fabric of the traditional centre.
Beyond the last streets the map falls almost silent, with only a few long roads across the plain, which gives the city a strong, isolated outline.

Koteā ko Ardakān
Ardakān is a place people carry with them, whether they left for Tehran, Yazd or further afield. A map of its lanes and avenues is a restrained, personal way to keep the city present at home.
Set a custom title and subtitle, for example in your own spelling of the name, and edit the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Sand in particular echoes the colours of the desert around the city.
