Arlington lies north-west of Cambridge in Massachusetts, in the gentle hills just outside Boston. Its main street, Massachusetts Avenue, crosses the town from east to west, and the Minuteman Bikeway follows a former railway line alongside it, linking Arlington with Cambridge, Lexington and Bedford.
The town has its place in early American history. On 19 April 1775, when it was still called Menotomy, some of the heaviest fighting of the first day of the Revolutionary War took place here. It is also the birthplace of Samuel Wilson, the meat packer associated with the figure of Uncle Sam.
