Te mapa
Arukutti lies in the backwater country of Kerala, on the northern edge of Alappuzha district and close to the Kochi region. The land here is low and threaded with water. Vembanad Lake and its many channels break the ground into narrow strips and islands, and on a map the village reads as a thin band of settlement edged by water on several sides.
Roads follow the available land, running along the strip with short lanes branching towards the water's edge, where houses, coconut groves and small jetties meet the backwaters. Bridges carry the main routes across channels to neighbouring areas. These crossings, lines stretching over open water, are among the most striking details of the drawing.
An Arukutti map poster is as much a portrait of water as of land. The irregular shorelines, the nearby islands and the slender roads between them create a composition full of edges, even in black and white. It is a fitting keepsake for Keralites with roots here and for visitors who spent time on the lake.
Vembanad, Kerala's largest lake, and its channels surround much of the village, and their irregular shorelines give the map its defining outline.
Main roads cross the backwater channels on bridges, drawn as short straight lines over open water that connect the village to neighbouring land.
Houses and lanes line up along the narrow land between waterways, forming a slender, elongated pattern rather than a compact town centre.

Koteā ko Arukutti
Kerala's diaspora is large, and many people living in the Gulf, Europe or North America remain strongly attached to their home panchayat. A map of Arukutti, with its water and bridges, is an instantly recognisable piece of home.
Personalise the title with the village name in the spelling you prefer, add a family name or a date, and choose from five styles. Blueprint suits the watery outline particularly well. HD files cost $9, and printed posters can be ordered with an optional wooden frame.
