Te mapa
Kochi is less a single city than a group of islands, peninsulas and mainland districts arranged around a natural harbour. On the map the Arabian Sea coast runs along the west, the backwaters of Vembanad Lake spread inland, and Willingdon Island, Bolgatty and Vypin sit in the channels between. The mainland city of Ernakulam faces them across the water with a denser grid of streets.
For centuries Kochi was one of the main ports of the Malabar spice trade, and Portuguese, Dutch and British traders all left their mark on Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. The cantilevered Chinese fishing nets on the Fort Kochi shore are the city's best-known image. Since 2012 Kochi has hosted the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India's largest contemporary art exhibition.
In a Kochi map poster the water is the real subject. Channels, lagoons and the harbour mouth divide the land into separate pieces, each with its own street pattern. The old lanes of Fort Kochi, the port on Willingdon Island and the busier grid of Ernakulam sit side by side in one intricate composition.
The historic quarter on the south-western peninsula keeps its narrow, irregular lanes, left by centuries of trading settlements, right beside the harbour mouth.
Built largely from dredged material in the 1920s and 1930s, this artificial island holds the port and naval facilities. It shows on the map as a broad, geometric shape in the channel.
East and south of the harbour, the backwaters branch into lagoons and narrow channels. They break the city into islands and give the poster its layered, watery character.

Koteā ko Kochi
People remember Kochi for its water, from ferry rides across the harbour to evenings on the Fort Kochi shore. A map showing how channels stitch the city together makes a thoughtful gift for Malayalis abroad or for visitors who fell for the place.
You can title the poster with a neighbourhood, add a date or a line about home, and keep or edit the coordinates. Pick one of five styles: Blueprint suits the harbour well, while Paper and Sand give a softer, warmer look.
