Te mapa
Kozhikode, long known as Calicut, stretches along the Malabar Coast of Kerala. On a map the long, straight beach forms the western edge, and the city spreads inland in a dense web of streets rather than a grid. The Kallai River marks the southern side of the centre, where timber yards once lined the banks, and backwaters and tree-covered neighbourhoods soften the outer districts.
For centuries the city was a major port of the spice trade, ruled by the Zamorins and visited by merchants from Arabia and China. In 1498 Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad, just north of the city, opening the sea route from Europe to India. In 2023 Kozhikode was named India's first UNESCO City of Literature.
A Kozhikode map poster brings together the coastline, the river and the lanes of the old commercial centre around Mananchira and SM Street. In monochrome, the dense, organic network of streets contrasts with the clean edge of the sea, and the result feels both historic and contemporary, a fitting portrait of a city shaped by trade and reading.
The coast runs almost straight along the western side of the city, drawn as a crisp boundary where the fine street network meets open water.
The historic square with its large water tank sits at the centre of the city, a clear open shape surrounded by the tight lanes of the old commercial district.
The river on the southern edge of the centre, once known for its timber trade, adds a winding line and a wide mouth where it meets the sea.

Kozhikode draws deep affection from Malayalis at home and in the Gulf, and from readers, food lovers and travellers who have walked its beach at sunset. A map of the city is a warm, understated reminder that fits any room.
