Te mapa
Arusha lies on the lower southern slopes of Mount Meru, in northern Tanzania. The town is built on rising ground, and several rivers, including the Themi and Naura, run south through it in small valleys. On a map, these streams break up the street network and give the town a patchwork of neighbourhoods separated by green strips.
The central area is compact, with a clock tower that local tradition holds to be halfway between Cairo and Cape Town. Roads leave the centre in different directions, toward Moshi and Kilimanjaro to the east, and toward the Serengeti and Ngorongoro to the west. For many visitors, this is where a safari starts.
Arusha also has a strong political history. The Arusha Declaration of 1967 set out Tanzania's policy direction after independence, and the town is home to the headquarters of the East African Community. A Arusha map poster shows the rivers, the hills and the roads that make it the region's crossroads.
The Themi, Naura and other small rivers run south through the town, cutting green channels between neighbourhoods and shaping the street pattern.
The compact centre around the clock tower, where main roads meet and head out toward the national parks and the Kenyan border.
To the north the ground rises toward Mount Meru, and the town's outer streets become sparser and more winding on the slopes.
