Te mapa
As Salamīyah lies about thirty kilometres southeast of Hama, on a broad plain where cultivated land gives way to the steppe. From above there is almost no terrain to shape the town. The streets form a fairly regular pattern around the centre, and roads run outward in straight lines toward Hama, Homs and the eastern desert.
The town has a long history as a place of learning. It is closely tied to the Ismaili community, and early Ismaili imams lived here before the movement that founded the Fatimid state moved west to North Africa. Today it is still an important centre for Ismailis in Syria, and the town has historic mosques and shrines.
Because the land around it is so flat, the As Salamīyah map poster is all about contrast. You get a dense built-up area, roads that radiate outward, and wide empty space all around. On a hill to the west stands Shmemis Castle, a ruined fortress that has looked out over this plain for centuries.
Straight roads run outward from the town in several directions across the plain. On the poster they look like spokes leading off toward neighbouring cities.
East of town, farmland thins into the Syrian steppe. On the map, the street lines stop and a quiet stretch of open paper takes over.
This ruined hilltop fortress west of town stands on an old volcanic cone. It is one of the few raised features in an otherwise level landscape.
