Te mapa
Samandağ lies at the southwestern tip of Turkey's Hatay province, where the Orontes, known locally as the Asi, reaches the Mediterranean. The town spreads across a coastal plain. A long, straight sandy beach runs to the south, and the mountain of Musa Dağı rises steeply to the north, so the built-up area has a clear natural frame on two sides.
The coast here has a long history. The ruins of Seleucia Pieria, the ancient port of Antioch, lie at Çevlik to the north, including a rock-cut channel known as the Titus Tunnel. The beach is also a nesting site for sea turtles. The town was among those hit hard by the February 2023 earthquakes.
A Samandağ map poster reads as a meeting of three edges: the mountain, the river and the sea. Streets fill the plain between them, the river bends its way to the shore, and the coastline stretches smoothly across the bottom of the frame.
The Asi winds across the plain and meets the sea south of the town. It is one of the most graceful lines on the map and a natural focal point.
An unbroken shoreline runs along the Mediterranean. On paper it forms a clean, gently curving edge that contrasts with the denser streets inland.
Mountain ground rises to the north of the town. There the street pattern thins out and gives way to open space, which marks the edge of the settlement.

Koteā ko Samandağ
Samandağ means a great deal to the people of Hatay and its diaspora, especially since 2023. A map can hold the memory of streets as they were and as they are being rebuilt.
