Kilis lies in southern Turkey, just north of the Syrian border and south of Gaziantep. The town sits on an open plateau, and from above its compact centre is surrounded almost entirely by olive groves, whose regular rows give the landscape a distinctive fine-grained texture.
Kilis is one of Turkey's smallest provinces by area, and the town has long been a trading post between Anatolia and northern Syria. In the 2010s it took in a very large number of refugees from the Syrian war, which for a time nearly equalled its native population.
