As Sulayyil lies in the far south of the Riyadh Region of Saudi Arabia, near the northern edge of the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter. On the map, the town is a planned arrangement of streets and blocks surrounded by open desert. Palm groves and farms form green patches on its edges, where water has long made settlement possible.
The town sits where major roads meet. Long, straight highways run north toward Riyadh, south toward Wadi ad-Dawasir and Najran and west across the desert. These routes give the town its role as a stopping point in a sparsely populated region.
