Te mapa
Āsansol is laid out along lines of transport. The Grand Trunk Road, one of the oldest long-distance routes in South Asia, runs through the city, and a major railway line follows closely beside it. From above, the urban area is a long band of streets around these two routes, with neighbourhoods and colliery settlements branching off on either side.
The city lies in the Raniganj coalfield, and mining has shaped the land around it. The map shows scattered clusters of settlements, spoil areas and industrial sites among the fields, rather than one neat edge. To the south flows the Damodar River, and to the west the Barakar marks the boundary with Jharkhand. Both rivers frame the area with broad, sandy channels.
Āsansol grew as a railway and industrial centre, and it remains an important rail junction in eastern India. Together with Durgapur, it forms one of the main urban clusters of western West Bengal. An Āsansol map poster reflects that working character: roads, rails and rivers drawn clearly, with the settlements of the coal belt woven between them.
The historic highway crosses the city as a firm diagonal line, and much of Āsansol's commercial life is arranged along its length and nearby junctions.
The main line and its yards run beside the highway, producing parallel tracks and sidings that give the centre its strong linear structure.
The wide Damodar River curves along the southern side of the area, a broad, pale channel that sets a natural boundary for the city.
