Te mapa
Ashikaga lies in the southwest of Tochigi Prefecture, where the Kantō plain meets the first line of hills. The Watarase River runs through the city, and on a map its broad channel and embankments form the strongest line in the composition. The historic centre sits on the north bank, backed by wooded slopes, while newer districts and factories spread across the flat land to the south.
The city is the ancestral home of the Ashikaga clan, whose shoguns ruled Japan from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Bannaji, a temple on the site of the family residence, still keeps its square moat and earthen walls. Nearby is the Ashikaga Gakko, often called the oldest school in Japan. Ashikaga later became a textile centre, and today it is also known for the wisteria of Ashikaga Flower Park.
An Ashikaga map poster brings out the neat square of Bannaji at the heart of the old town, the curving river and the fringe of hills that frames the northern edge. It is an elegant, balanced image for anyone who has studied, lived or travelled here, and it rewards a close look at the small details of the historic centre.
The temple on the old Ashikaga residence is surrounded by a square moat, a small, precise shape that stands out clearly among the streets of the historic centre.
The wide river crosses the city in a broad curve, its banks and bridges dividing the old centre from the flatter districts that spread to the south.
Wooded slopes rise directly behind the old town, and roads end abruptly where the hills begin, giving the northern edge of the map a clear natural boundary.
