Te mapa
Astana stands on the open steppe of northern Kazakhstan, on the Ishim River, which Kazakhs call the Esil. The older city occupies the right bank in a regular Soviet-era grid, while the left bank, largely empty until the late 1990s, holds the new administrative centre. The river curves between them, and its meanders give the map its most organic lines.
When the capital moved here from Almaty in 1997, the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa produced a master plan built around a long east–west axis on the left bank. Along it stand the Baiterek tower, the tent-shaped Khan Shatyr and the presidential palace, with ministries and boulevards laid out symmetrically on either side. The city has changed name several times, most recently back to Astana in 2022.
Astana is among the coldest capital cities in the world, with long winters when the river freezes solid, and a green belt was planted around it partly to soften the wind. An Astana map poster shows the contrast between the compact older grid, the formal new axis and the broad, empty land that still surrounds the city.
A straight ceremonial boulevard runs for several kilometres across the new city, lined with parks and monumental buildings and ending at the presidential palace in the east.
The river loops through the city in tight curves, separating the old and new halves and adding soft, winding lines to an otherwise geometric plan.
The older city laid out in the Soviet period forms a regular grid of rectangular blocks, denser and more uniform than the spacious districts across the river.

Koteā ko Astana
Astana is a city many people moved to for a new career, a government post or a university place, and its growth mirrors their own. A map records the city as it stands in a given year, which suits a place that changes this quickly.
Add a name, a date or a district to the title and subtitle, and set the coordinates line as you prefer. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Noir suits the long winter evenings of the steppe.
