Te mapa
Karagandy sits on the flat Kazakh steppe in the centre of the country, and its map shows a city that was designed rather than grown. Wide avenues run in long straight lines, residential blocks form orderly rectangles, and large parks break the grid with softer shapes. Toward the edges the pattern loosens into separate settlements, rail yards and industrial sites, a reminder that the city came together from mining communities.
It grew in the 1930s on the Karaganda coal basin, one of the main coal regions of the Soviet Union, and much of its early labour came from the Karlag camp system and from deported peoples. That history left a distinct geography: an Old Town and a New City some distance apart, linked by roads and railway lines across open ground.
The name comes from the karagan, a caragana shrub that grows on the surrounding steppe. A Karagandy map poster captures the calm geometry of the centre, the green rectangle of the Central Park with its water, and the thinning outskirts where streets give way to the wide, empty land around the city.
The central districts are organised along long, straight avenues and broad crossings, which gives the poster a strong architectural rhythm typical of mid-century Soviet planning.
A large green area with a lake near the heart of the city, one of the few places where curved paths and shorelines interrupt the regular street pattern.
Separate cores built at different stages sit apart on the map, connected by roads and rail lines, so the city reads as a cluster rather than a single circle.

Koteā ko Karagandy
Karagandy is a city many families passed through, whether they came for mining, study or work, or were sent there against their will. A map of its streets can carry a personal story quietly, without needing a photograph. Download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
Title it Karagandy or Qaraghandy, add a year in the subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Noir works particularly well here, with the dense centre set against the empty steppe.
