Te mapa
Ust-Kamenogorsk, now officially called Öskemen, was founded in 1720 as a Russian fortress where the Ulba River flows into the Irtysh. The confluence is still the centre of the map. The old town sits in the angle between the two rivers, and newer districts spread along both banks. Bridges cross back and forth, giving the city its characteristic branching shape.
The mountains are close. The Altai foothills rise to the east and north, and a hydroelectric dam holds back the Irtysh just upstream, with the larger Bukhtarma reservoir further into the hills. On an Ust-Kamenogorsk map poster, the wide dark ribbon of the Irtysh dominates the composition, with the narrower Ulba curving in from the northeast.
The city is one of Kazakhstan's main centres of non-ferrous metallurgy. Large plants for zinc, lead, titanium and other metals take up big blocks along the rivers and railway lines. Those industrial areas, with their long buildings and tracks, contrast with the Soviet-era residential districts of large blocks and courtyards that fill most of the city.

Large industrial sites for non-ferrous metals sit along the rivers and rail lines. Their big rectangular plots contrast clearly with the residential blocks.
Hills rise to the east and north of the city. The streets stop at their edge, and the Irtysh valley leads upstream towards the dam and reservoir.

Koteā ko Ust-Kamenogorsk
Many people from East Kazakhstan now live elsewhere, but still think of the rivers and the view towards the Altai as home. A map of the confluence is a simple, clear way to keep that place on the wall.
You can change the title, for example to Öskemen or Ust-Kamenogorsk, and write your own subtitle and coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 HD files come in six sizes, or order a printed poster.
