Te mapa
Omsk was founded in 1716 as a fortress where the small Om River flows into the broad Irtysh. That confluence is still the centre of the city map. The historic core sits in the angle between the two rivers, and the city stretches for many kilometres along the Irtysh, with residential areas and industry on both banks.
The Irtysh runs through the city as a wide, curving band, crossed by several road and rail bridges. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through Omsk, and the main station is on the left bank. An Omsk map poster shows the long waterfronts, the older blocks near the confluence and the large grid-built districts of the Soviet period.
In the nineteenth century Fyodor Dostoevsky served four years of penal labour at the Omsk fortress, an experience he described in Notes from the House of the Dead. During the civil war, the city briefly served as the seat of Admiral Kolchak's White government. Today Omsk is a major centre for industry and oil refining in western Siberia.
The small Om meets the wide Irtysh at the historic centre. Its old fortress area forms the point where the city began.
The river curves through the whole city. Wide bridges and long embankments connect districts on both banks and create the main structure of the map.
The railway runs through Omsk along the left bank. Its tracks and yards cut a long, clear line through the southern districts.

Koteā ko Omsk
Omsk is a city of long distances and wide rivers, and its map conveys that sense of scale. It is a strong choice for Siberians living far from home or for anyone who has travelled the Trans-Siberian.
