Te mapa
Novosibirsk began in 1893 as a settlement for the builders of the railway bridge that carried the Trans-Siberian line across the Ob, and the river is still the centre of its map. The Ob runs south to north through the city in a broad channel. The larger, older part lies on the right bank, and industrial and residential districts spread across the left.
On the right bank, Krasny Prospekt runs as a long straight axis through the centre, past Lenin Square and the large domed Opera and Ballet Theatre. Several road bridges and a metro bridge cross the river, and the metro bridge is among the longest in the world. Upstream to the south, the Ob widens into the Novosibirsk Reservoir, known locally as the Ob Sea.
Near the reservoir lies Akademgorodok, the science town founded in the late 1950s, with its institutes and housing spread through birch and pine forest. A Novosibirsk map poster shows the third-largest city in Russia as a pattern of long avenues, river crossings and forested edges. In a large print, you can see the full width of the Ob against the streets.
The river is several hundred metres wide as it passes the centre and splits the city into two large halves. It is the dominant feature of any view of Novosibirsk.
The main avenue runs straight through the right-bank centre for several kilometres. It leads from the river toward the northern districts and anchors the whole street plan.
South of the city the reservoir opens into a wide body of water. On its shore, the science town sits among forest, drawn loosely with curving roads.
