Aţfīḩ lies on the east bank of the Nile in the southern part of Giza Governorate. Here the cultivated land is narrow. The river is on one side and the desert plateau is on the other. The town sits between them, surrounded by fields and irrigation canals.
This place is very old. In ancient times it was known to the Greeks as Aphroditopolis and was associated with the goddess Hathor, and burials of sacred cows have been found nearby. An Aţfīḩ map poster shows the settlement between river and desert, as it has been for thousands of years.
From above, the map falls into three clear bands: the broad river, the green farmland with its closely packed villages, and the empty desert to the east. Roads and canals run parallel to the Nile and give the design a strong north-south direction.
