Te mapa
New Cairo was established around 2000 on the desert plateau east of the historic capital, and its map looks nothing like the dense old city. Wide main axes run for kilometres, residential districts are organised in large sectors with curving internal roads, and open land still separates many of the neighbourhoods. The Ring Road marks its western approach.
The Fifth Settlement, known locally as El Tagamoa El Khames, is the best-known part of the city, and the South 90th Street corridor forms its central spine, lined with offices, malls and universities. The American University in Cairo moved its main campus here in 2008, and many schools and businesses have followed the same shift east.
A New Cairo map poster is a portrait of contemporary planning: looping cul-de-sacs, long straight boulevards and repeated compound layouts. In black and white, the patterns look almost like an architectural drawing. It is a very different image of Egypt from the Nile and the Pyramids, yet increasingly where many Cairenes live and work.
The main boulevard of the Fifth Settlement runs as a long, straight axis through the city, lined with commercial and educational buildings on either side.
Gated residential compounds use curving internal roads and cul-de-sacs, creating repeated organic shapes that contrast with the rigid main grid around them.
Cairo's Ring Road runs along the western side, the link to the older city and a clear boundary line on the map.

Koteā ko New Cairo
For families who moved east, students at the universities and expatriates who spent a few years here, New Cairo is home in a very specific, modern sense. Its graphic plan makes a striking piece for a contemporary interior.
