Āthagarh lies in Cuttack district, Odisha, not far from the Mahanadi River as it moves toward the delta. On a map, the town is a loose cluster of streets and lanes built up around its main roads. It has no formal grid. The pattern grows from the routes that connect the town with the villages and with Cuttack.
The town was once the seat of the princely state of Athgarh, and it remains an administrative and market centre for the surrounding area.
