Te mapa
Auburn sits just south of Worcester in central Massachusetts, and from above the first thing you notice is its highways. The Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstate 290 and Interstate 395 all meet here. Their long curves and interchange loops cross a landscape that is otherwise made of winding local roads, cul-de-sacs and patches of woodland. The map shows a clear tension between regional traffic and the scale of a small town.
Between the road corridors, the town is dotted with ponds and low hills, which is typical of Worcester County. Residential streets bend around the water and follow the slopes instead of forming a strict grid, so the drawing feels loose and natural. An Auburn map poster shows this contrast well: heavy arterial strokes on one side and fine, meandering residential lines on the other.
Auburn also has a quiet place in the history of science. In March 1926 Robert Goddard launched the first liquid-fuelled rocket from a farm field in the town, a flight that lasted only a few seconds. A marker commemorates the site today. With that story in mind, a plain black-and-white plan of these streets becomes a reminder that some very large beginnings happen in modest places.
The Turnpike, I-290 and I-395 converge within the town, and their sweeping ramps and cloverleaf curves create the boldest shapes on the whole map.
Scattered ponds and gentle rises break up the residential areas, pushing streets into curves and loops rather than the straight blocks seen in larger cities.
The field where Goddard's 1926 rocket flew is marked today. On the map it sits among ordinary residential streets, which is part of what makes the story so memorable.
