Austin lies in southern Minnesota, close to the Iowa border, on the Cedar River. The town follows the regular grid of streets typical of Midwestern settlements. The river and its millpond run through the town and break the regularity with soft curves, and Interstate 90 passes along the northern edge.
Austin is best known as the headquarters of Hormel Foods, the company that created SPAM. The town is home to the SPAM Museum, which draws visitors from around the country. Parks and green spaces line the Cedar River and the millpond, and farmland surrounds the town in every direction.
