Te mapa
Avrankou is a commune in the Ouémé department of southern Benin, a short distance from Porto-Novo, the country's official capital. The area is one of the most densely populated parts of Benin, and farming, trade and daily movement towards Porto-Novo and Cotonou shape life here.
From above, the settlement does not form a single compact block. Houses and compounds spread across the land in clusters linked by a web of unpaved lanes, with gardens, fields and oil palms filling the spaces between them. A few main roads carry traffic towards Porto-Novo and the border region with Nigeria.
An Avrankou map poster turns this spread-out pattern into fine, organic linework. There is no grid, but there is a clear rhythm: firm roads connecting the villages, and dense local paths between compounds. On paper it gives a real sense of how settlements in southern Benin are organised.
Narrow unpaved paths branch between family compounds and fields. Together they create an intricate, irregular pattern across the whole map.
The main routes run towards Porto-Novo and form the firmer lines of the map, which anchor the dense local network around them.
Palm groves, gardens and fields break up the settlement, and the open areas between housing clusters give the map air and texture.
