Āykel is a town of around 34,000 people in the Amhara Region of northwestern Ethiopia. It sits in the highlands west of Gondar, and its layout follows the main road that crosses the area, with neighbourhoods spreading out on both sides.
On the map, that road is the backbone. Side streets branch off it in short, irregular runs that follow the slope of the land.
