Te mapa
Aymanam lies just west of Kottayam town, in the low, water-laced country that leads toward Vembanad Lake. The Meenachil River and a web of canals and backwater channels run through it, and from above the map is as much water as land: narrow strips of houses and coconut groves on raised banks, with wide, flat paddy fields between them.
The village became known far beyond Kerala through Arundhati Roy's novel The God of Small Things, which is set here and won the Booker Prize in 1997. The book's houses and characters are fictional, but the landscape it describes, of slow rivers, heavy rain and dense greenery, is recognisably this one.
An Aymanam map poster turns this watery landscape into lines: the loops of the river, the straight edges of the fields, the thin roads running along embankments. It is a quiet, intricate image, and for anyone who has read the novel it carries an added layer of meaning.
The river loops through the village on its way to Vembanad Lake, a slow, meandering line that anchors the whole composition.
Canals and narrow waterways branch across the land, many used by small boats, dividing the settlement into long, island-like strips of houses and trees.
Large, flat rice fields sit low between the waterways, their straight bunds forming a calm geometric pattern among the palms.

Koteā ko Aymanam
Some people hang this map because they grew up among these channels, others because a novel brought them here in imagination. Either way, it is a map with a real story behind its lines.
