Te mapa
Azogues, capital of Ecuador's Cañar Province, lies in the southern Andes a short distance from Cuenca. On the map, the town climbs the slopes on either side of a river valley, with a relatively regular centre giving way to streets that curve along the hills. The terrain gives the city an elongated shape, stretched along the valley floor and the roads that follow it.
The town is known for weaving toquilla straw hats, the fine hats often called Panama hats, which are traditionally made in this part of Ecuador. Its skyline is marked by the church of San Francisco, set high on a hill above town, one of the most recognisable sights in the province and visible from much of the valley below.
An Azogues map poster brings out the combination of the valley, the dense centre and the winding streets rising up the slopes. It is a subtle portrait of a mountain town, where every street shows how the land shaped the way the city grew.
The town stretches along a river valley, and on the poster the river and the main road follow its floor, forming the central axis of the composition.
Streets on the slopes curve and switch back to follow the terrain, giving the edges of the map an irregular, organic pattern unlike the centre.
The church of San Francisco stands on a hill overlooking Azogues, a landmark that crowns the town and anchors its highest ground.
