Te mapa
Eloy Alfaro is the canton whose seat is Durán, on the eastern bank of the Guayas River directly opposite Guayaquil. On the map, the wide brown river runs along its western edge like a broad band, with Guayaquil's dense grid on the far side. The long National Unity Bridge crosses the water and links the two cities.
Durán grew as the coastal terminus of the Guayaquil–Quito railway. The line was completed in 1908 under President Eloy Alfaro, whose name the canton carries. An Eloy Alfaro map poster shows how the old tracks and the newer highways set the direction of the streets as the city spread inland.
Beyond the riverbank the land is low and flat, and many districts grew quickly as working-class neighbourhoods and industrial areas. From above, the street pattern is a mix of regular blocks and more informal lanes, bounded by the river on one side and the roads into the Ecuadorian interior on the other.
The wide river forms the whole western edge of the map, separating the city from Guayaquil and giving the composition a strong, open band of water.
The long National Unity Bridge spans the Guayas to Guayaquil. Its straight line across the water is the most recognisable engineered feature.
The line of the historic Guayaquil–Quito railway runs through the city and marks the route that first made Durán important.
