Te mapa
Guayaquil sits on the west bank of the Guayas River, just below the point where the Daule and Babahoyo rivers join. On a map the water dominates the eastern edge: a broad channel carrying the long island of Santay, with the town of Durán beyond it. The old centre is a tight grid of blocks running back from the riverbank, the part of the city that grew up around the port.
To the west the pattern loosens. The Estero Salado, a branching tidal inlet, pushes fingers of saltwater deep into the neighbourhoods, and the streets bend to follow its edges. North of downtown, Cerro Santa Ana and Cerro del Carmen rise above the grid. The hillside quarter of Las Peñas climbs Santa Ana by a long staircase to a lighthouse at the top.
Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and its main seaport, and the riverfront Malecón 2000 promenade follows the waterline for more than two kilometres. A Guayaquil map poster keeps all of this in plain black line work: the straight blocks, the loose curves of the estero, the island in the river and the bridges that cross the Daule toward Samborondón.
The city's eastern border is water. The wide Guayas channel and Santay Island form a clean boundary that anchors the whole composition and gives the grid something to face.
A branching arm of tidal water reaches into western Guayaquil, splitting neighbourhoods and curving the streets around it. On paper it reads almost like a second river system drawn inside the city.
At the north end of the old centre, Cerro Santa Ana breaks the grid. Its winding lanes and stairway, home to the Las Peñas quarter, show up as a small knot of irregular streets.

Koteā ko Guayaquil
For people from Guayaquil, the map is a way of carrying the river and the hills to wherever they live now. For visitors, it is a record of walks along the malecón and the climb up Santa Ana. The shape is distinctive enough to recognise from across a room.
