Te mapa
Bad Harzburg lies in Lower Saxony, right where the Harz mountains rise from the flat north German plain. On a map the contrast is striking. The town's streets are laid out on the open ground to the north, while to the south the Radau valley and steep, wooded hillsides lead into the mountains.
Above the town is the Burgberg, a hill that once held the Harzburg, a castle built by Emperor Henry IV in the eleventh century. A cable car runs to the top. The hill also has a column commemorating Bismarck's line about not going to Canossa. Bad Harzburg developed as a spa and resort, and its long spa gardens and promenades are still part of the town.
A Bad Harzburg map poster shows the sharp edge between town and forest. The streets stop at the foot of the slopes, and the mountain trails and the Radau valley road continue up into the Harz. Few maps show a landscape boundary this clearly.

The Radau stream flows out of the Harz through a narrow valley along the southern edge of town. A road and walking routes follow it into the mountains.
The resort's parks and promenades form a green band through the centre. The softer lines there set them apart from the ordinary streets around them.
