Te mapa
Balanga is the capital of Bataan province, on the western side of Manila Bay in Central Luzon. The city stretches from the foothills of the peninsula's mountains down to the bay, and on the map its built-up core sits between the two. A main road runs north to south through it, and to the east the shore dissolves into fishponds and mangroves.
The centre is organised around a large plaza facing the cathedral and close to the provincial capitol, an arrangement typical of Philippine towns laid out in the Spanish period, and recently redeveloped as a broad pedestrian square. From here streets spread outward in a loose grid that becomes more irregular toward the hills and toward the water.
Balanga lies on the route of the 1942 Bataan Death March, and markers along the road recall that history. On the bay shore, the Balanga Wetland and Nature Park draws birdwatchers during the migratory season. A Balanga map poster sets the city between mountain and bay: a compact capital with its plaza at the centre and the water close by.
The central square and the cathedral beside it form the focal point of the map, a large open space surrounded by the densest streets in the city.
To the east, the city meets the bay through a band of fishponds, channels and mangroves, giving the coastline a finely divided texture.
The main road through Bataan crosses the city from north to south, part of the route along which prisoners were forced to march in 1942.

Koteā ko Balanga
Balanga holds meaning for Bataan families, for descendants of veterans in the Philippines and the United States, and for anyone who knows the province well. The map presents the city plainly and respectfully, without decoration.
