Barstow Heights lies on the edge of Barstow in San Bernardino County, in the heart of the Mojave Desert. The landscape is wide and dry. Low ridges and washes lie on every side, and the mostly dry bed of the Mojave River runs nearby. Residential streets form a loose grid on the higher ground above the town.
The area sits at a long-standing crossroads of the American Southwest. Barstow grew around the railroad and Route 66, and today it sits near the junction of Interstates 15 and 40, which carry traffic toward Las Vegas and across the country.
