Te mapa
Rancho Cucamonga lies on the long alluvial slope below the San Gabriel Mountains. On a map, the mountains form a sharp northern edge where streets simply stop. Below them, the city spreads out on a large grid of arterial roads, filled with curving subdivisions, business parks and shopping centres. The ground rises steadily to the north, but on paper it looks almost flat.
Foothill Boulevard, part of the historic Route 66, crosses the city east to west. Several flood control channels and washes run straight down from the canyons, drawing firm diagonal and vertical lines through the neighbourhoods. Before the suburbs, this land was covered in vineyards, and Cucamonga was one of California's early wine districts.
A Rancho Cucamonga map poster shows how the city grew out of three older communities, Alta Loma, Cucamonga and Etiwanda. Their names still mark different parts of the map. Victoria Gardens, an outdoor shopping district, appears as a large parcel in the east. Railway lines and the 210 freeway divide the suburbs into distinct bands.
The San Gabriel foothills close off the northern side of the city, where residential streets end abruptly against steep, empty slopes.
This section of old Route 66 runs straight across the city, a long horizontal line linking the historic core with newer development.
Concrete channels and washes run down from the canyons in straight lines, crossing the grid and adding a sharp, engineered pattern.
